it’s a known fact that German car makers put cupholders low on their priority list. 8/10 they are an after thought. 9/10 they dont work as intended, and sometimes they aren’t even trying. like this.
this is the back seat of a 2015 X5. what was a 55-60,000 dollar SUV(this one is even the most expecive 35d), that is now a 30,000 dollar SUV, and that THING is supposed to be a cup holder. Now front cub holders being an after thought kinda makes sense. when you’re in the front seat you should be engaged in the driving experience even as a co-pilot, according to the Germans. But this is back seat, a place reserved for children, and the elderly, a place to relax, and just be along for the ride. You need a good cup holder in the back. Instead BMW gives you half asleep, unenthusiastic hand job of a cup holder. Unacceptable

Cupholders have been an afterthought in BMW's for years, kinda like their quality.

still not as bad as what i think was a 90 some eagle talon
who builds a car without an ashtray?
do you want wildfires? coz thats how you get wildfires

It’ s miles ahead of the cupholders in the back of the 4runner.

Have you actually tried them to test that theory though? I always thought the G Wagen cupholder looked totally useless and then I tried it and was like damn its actually kinda brilliant. Regardless, my Z3 Coupe has zero cupholders and my E34 530i has a removable cupholder that just fits on the edge of the center console that I think is OEM but its possible it came with no cupholder. I don’t really mind though

A lot of cars nowadays don’t have ashtrays, you might be able to order a smoker’s package that puts one in your cupholder.

They’re really getting away from ashtrays , especially on anything with 4 doors. In 8 US states, smoking with a kid in the car is illegal.

well shit... good thing i dont plan on owning anything built later than the 90s

haaaa... land of the free my ass
(that said.... smoking around kids is a dick move... even i dont smoke indoors before the non smokers go to bed)
(yeah i know the smell is still shitty and harmfull)

(Laughs in Mk3 Golf) Seriously, even if these were deep or wide enough to hold a cup, the consol rught above it limits height to maybe six inches.

I haven’t used them but they look bad.
Those ones that fit on the center console were dealer options I believe. Even t he 1 series uses them

I think germans just have smaller serving sizes. The cup holder in my e90 only work with 12oz coffe cups, 12 oz cans or 8.4 Red Bull/espresso cans

To be fair, the real cup holders are in the bottom of the door panels.

Those are bottle holders.

They don’t look too bad to me, but it all depends on how sturdy those pieces are probably. The worst ones are those ones that they used in the 2000s that you push the button and it pops out from the dash. I’d rather just have it with no cupholders than that thing lol

I’ve always considered cup holders on German cars proof they have a sense of humor.

I don’t really have a rule about no drinks in the car, but m y Mustang’s cup holder is in just about the worst place they could have put it. It unfolds out of the center console armrest, extending forward, directly under the driver’s forearm. And it does so at a height that’s nearly even with the top of the armrest, making it horribly awkward to shift gears. I never, ever use it.

Hey Hans look how horrible I’ve made zez cupholers.
Ya, ze Americans will be so annoyed, ziz is to funny.

My Accord had its cubholders right behind the shifter As well it was obviously not made with a manual trans in mind

The only thing I have have to say about this is, quit whining.
North Americans are probably the only people that drink and eat while driving.
And t he Germans put cup holders in their cars. Yes, they’re small, but they’re there - just for you! Only compromise is you may have to d rink smaller drinks. And that ’s okay!
All other markets have had to deal with cars usuall y built to your eccentricities.
Many cars have a mph>kmph conversion thingy, even though you are the only ones using miles. Tires are usually built to DOT standards, even when they’re sold outside America. Hell, there are even car manufacturers that spell out the button functions in English instead of symbols, when their cars are sold in incredibly large markets like China and India .
It’s time you put up with cars that have some reflection of the lives that the rest of the 6.6 billion people.

In a narrow thermos so it’s disguised as coffee.

How novel!

These look pretty good from my perspective
. I bet they fit to conform to different sizes of cups and cans. Much better than the normal American plastic hole where only 1 diameter fits well and anything smaller tilts and falls over.

Cup holders have other uses too. I have a cell phone holder in 1

When the first new MINI came out, the cupholder placement was one of the biggest tells that it was now a BMW product. Impossible to put anything in there without crushing/spilling it while working the shifter.
![]() 10/17/2018 at 11:48 |

I would bet it was still a better cupholder than what the original Mini had...

Sure, but cupholders weren't a thing in 1959, they certainly were in 2000.
